8* Take Charlotte – Brooklyn UNDER (#533-534)
The Hornets first game without LaMelo Ball as their starting point guard stayed 27 points Under the posted total against the Spurs. They scored 122 against ‘no-defense’ Houston in their second game without Ball thanks to 51% shooting and 18 made three pointers. The game still stayed Under the total. In Game 3 without Ball, early bettors cashed with the Under against Miami but a late flurry of ‘scramble’ points sent the game Over the closing total with three seconds to play. Against Phoenix, the game went to overtime and STILL stayed more than 20 points Under the total. Last time out, facing the uptempo, defensively challenged Wizards, Charlotte still stayed double digits Under the total. Clearly, Charlotte is playing slower without Ball, an Under team until proven otherwise
The Hornets loved to run with ‘Melo at the point, but notched only five fast break points against the Spurs and only six against the Suns. In fact, they’ve been held to 15 fast break points or less in all five games since he got hurt. Head Coach James Borrego knew that his team had to change their style moving forward; not expecting to play uptempo basketball in the games to come. The betting markets have been lagging behind Charlotte’s current reality when it comes to totals; an ‘Under’ team worth riding for a few games (or more).
The Nets won’t have James Harden in the lineup tonight, joining Kevin Durant and Landy Shamet on the sidelines in street clothes. The last time Harden sat (and the only game he’s missed since joining Brooklyn), the Nets scored 88 points and cashed Under bets with room to spare. In fact, the Nets have slowed their pace and stepped up their defense with or without Harden of late; 5-1 to the Under in the last six games. Let’s ride these Under trends one more time tonight! Take the UNDER.
