8* Take Oakland (#923)
Zack Greinke was scratched form Game 3, dealing with arm soreness. He was not expected to pitch in the series, but Dusty Baker has run out of starting pitchers that he trusts, even a little bit. It’s not like the Astros bullpen is trustworthy either, blowing yet another game yesterday, with a trip to the ALCS in Houston’s sights. Dusty Baker’s quote about his pitchers today: “We're a little thin. Whoever starts tomorrow, we need some innings out of him, as many innings as possible to limit our bullpen action.” It’s surely worth noting that Greinke hasn’t recorded an out in the sixth inning or later in any of his last four starts, not an ‘innings eater’ at this stage of his career.
And there’s something to be said from Oakland’s positive momentum; saving their season with a couple of late inning rallies. Chad Pinder, who’s three run home run tied the game in the seventh, talking about how Ramon Laureano’s pep talk in the dugout sparked the team: “You can kind of feel when we got into the dugout, energy was down again and we were getting that same flat-line feeling. Ramon was having absolutely no part of that. I won't go into too much depth with what he said, but it was along the lines of, 'This ain't over. This is not our last game.'" Expect that momentum to carry over into today’s game.
Here’s Bob Melvin, talking about A’s starter Frankie Montas, who is healthy again after some mid-season issues: “The stuff's always there, and he had a little bit of a rough patch ... but at the start he was fantastic. He was our Opening Day guy and deserved to be. He had to go through (health issues) and fight through that ... and then found it at the end, so we have a lot of confidence in him." Montas and the A’s are worth backing today in this near pick ‘em price range. Take the A’s.
