8* Take the New York Knicks (#569)
The Pistons are 2-11 SU off a SU win for the full season (4-8-1 ATS), and they’re in a pointspread range where they’ll likely need the SU win in order to get the pointspread cover. Detroit has been a terrible short underdog; 3-11 ATS in games where they’ve been priced between +1 and +4.5; the Knicks are 11-6 ATS in that same pointspread range as favorites. And while the Knicks are on the second of back-2-backs, neither team has any real edge when it comes to fatigue – it’ll be the third game in four nights for both teams.
This Dwayne Casey quote off the Pistons blowout win against Washington on Thursday stands out to me as a ‘bet-against’ quote: “We’re a young team and we don’t have a set rotation. We need guys who will be ready to play every night, no matter how many minutes they are getting.” Detroit’s rotations have been in flux for weeks; dealing with injuries and trades, most notably in terms of their guard rotations. Those issues didn’t matter in recent wins against defensively challenged Toronto and Washington, but Detroit’s guard issues are likely to matter today against a hungry Knicks team that ranks #4 in the NBA in defensive efficiency.
There’s a sense of urgency for New York today following their third straight loss last night, at home to Dallas. Veteran guard Derrick Rose: “Every team is fighting for something right now. And the teams that are not fighting for something, they will love to see to be the team to knock us out of the playoffs. That’s what the NBA is about: No Boys Allowed.” New York beat Detroit by double digits last month, their fourth consecutive win and cover in this series. Expect a fifth consecutive win and cover against the Pistons tonight. Take the Knicks.
