|-2.5 USA (-145) @ sportsinteraction|
My selection is on USA -2.5 goals over Martinique at 9:30 pm et on Thursday.
While the final score showed 1-0, the end result could have been far more lopsided in favor of the Americans had they capitalized on their many scoring opportunities against Haiti in their Gold Cup opener. Here, I look for the USA to do just that as it rolls past an overmatched Martinique squad.
Martinique has yet to even earn a FIFA ranking and finds itself in this tournament as decided underdogs in its group. It stunningly found an early goal against Canada in its opener, but that was only thanks to a Canadian miscue. From there, Martinique managed just one shot on target in an eventual 4-1 defeat.
The USA has elected to go with a more inexperienced squad than we've come to expect in this tournament, but it is still brimming with talent and capable of running circles around a disorganized Martinique team. Note that the Americans hit a pair of posts and missed numerous other A+ scoring chances against Haiti - a considerably better defensive squad than it will face here, even with a number of key cogs missing due to Covid protocols.
Note that this Martinique team's tournament opener marked its first international match since 2019. It's really less a case of rust as it is simple lack of cohesiveness when it comes to this squad and I'm not sure a few more days of practice will be the cure for what ails it.
This is obviously a key match for the USA as it looks to wrap up advancement ahead of a tough match against Canada. Look for the Americans to take full advantage of the opportunity in front of them here. Take USA -2.5 goals (9*).
