The Pirates might have something in young Roansy Contreras, who owns a 3.52 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across his 7 ⅔ innings this season at the big league level. The 22-year-old posted a 2.66 ERA in five starts during his time at the Triple-A level and throws absolute gas.
Contreras will be opposed by Colorado starter Kyle Freeland, who is 1-4 with a 4.85 ERA in his eight starts that span 42 ⅔ innings. Outside of his walk rate, none of his Statcast numbers paint a pretty picture. He’s allowing too much hard contact, opposing batters are barreling his pitches at a slightly above average rate and he’s not striking anyone out.
Give me the Pirates.
