Losers of three straight, the Giants are in a funk. They blew a potential win in the late innings on Wednesday against the Rockies at Coors Field, then rallied in the bottom of the ninth against the Padres on Friday night, only to lose by a run in extra innings. On Saturday, they managed only a Wilmer Flores home run in the bottom of the eighth of an eventual 2-1 loss.
The Padres, meanwhile, are streaking. They’ve won three straight and five of their last six overall. Rookie MacKenzie Gore has been excellent in his first pro season, posting a 2-1 record with a 2.17 ERA over his six appearances (five starts) that span 29 innings. While he’s allowing too much hard contact, he’s missing barrels, his strikeout and walk rates are above league average and he’s keeping the ball in the yard (only two home runs allowed).
Even though Alex Wood (3-2, 3.93 ERA) has also been solid for the Giants, there’s too much value with the Padres today in San Francisco. Give me San Diego with plus odds.
