My 10* PERFECT STORM is on Louisville at 7:00 ET.
Leonard Hamilton has built a championship-caliber program at Florida St, one that has produced the THIRD most victories among ACC schools behind Duke and Virginia since 2016. Florida State went 14 days in a row without playing due to COVID-19 interruptions but the Seminoles beat North Carolina 82-75 on Saturday for their second consecutive victory after losing two of the previous three games. The now 7-2 Seminoles shot 48.0 percent against North Carolina, after making a blistering 70.7 percent of their shots during a 105-73 rout of North Carolina State on Wednesday.
Chris Mack took over at Xavier for the 2009-10 season when Sean Miller took the Arizona job. He led the Musketeers to eight NCAA tourneys in nine seasons before moving to Louisville. The Cards went 20-14 in his first season (NCAA bid) and were 24-7 in his second year, when the season was shut down in March (AP ranked them 14th in its final poll). Louisville entered the weekend riding a FIVE-game winning streak and was tied with Virginia atop the ACC. However, a 3-for-20 three-point shooting performance and Miami's 49.2-percent effort from the floor sent the Cardinals to a 78-72 road loss on Saturday. Louisville trailed by 12 at halftime and never found a rhythm offensively.
Florida State was 26-5 and poised to make a Final Four run before the postseason was curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but entered this season losing three key players from a team.PG Forrest (11.6-4.4-4.0), SG Vassell (12.7 & 5.1) and 6-7 swingman Williams (9.7 & 4.0) were all chosen in the NBA draft. Guard MJ Walker is back and leads with 16.3 PPG plus is surrounded by a talented group. Frontcourt veterans like the 7-1 Koprivica (9.4 & 5.7), the 6-8 Gray (8.3 & 5.4) start, while the 6-9 Osborne (3.9 & 4.7) comes off the bench. 6-9 freshman guard Barnes averages 11.1-3.8-4.1 but he's questionable with an ankle issue. Returning guard Polite (9.6 & 4.6) just misses double digits
Louisville swingman Jordan Nwora (18.0 & 7.7) is gone from last season's Louisville team but FOUR starters returned. However, Carlik Jones leads the team in scoring, averaging 18.0-6.2-4.9. He's a graduate transfer from Radford and was last season's Big South Conference player of the year. He joins returning guard Johnson (12.9-5.6-4.1) in the backcourt. The 6-7 Williamson did little last season but averages 10.0 & 7.2 this season. True freshman guard Davis (8.9 & 6.2) and the 6-8 Slazinski (6.6 & 4.3) plus 6-9 redshirt freshman Withers (8.9 & 6.2) all contribute.
Florida State won its 20th straight ACC home game on Saturday but now plays its THIRD game over a SIX-day stretch after going 14 in a row without playing (see above). Let me also note that the Seminoles lost 77-67 at Clemson on Dec 29 in their ONLY other true road game of the season and in Louisville, FSU is playing a ranked team for the FIRST time this season. The No. 16 Cardinals (9-2 / 4-1 ACC) look to rebound from their first Atlantic Coast Conference defeat and avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time this season. Louisville has won its last six home games, outscoring opponents on average, 74.3-to-60.3 PPG. VERY tough spot for the Seminoles. "PERFECT" spot for the Cards!
