Are they for real? Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia Cavaliers' head coach Al Groh has gone from sitting on the hotseat at the beginning of the season to being a candidate for the ACC Coach of the Year. His Cavaliers are 6-1 and sit atop the ACC Coastal in a tie for first place with Virginia Tech.

The Cavaliers are already bowl eligible and have surpassed their win total from a year ago. But how far can they go and can they actually make it to the ACC Championship?

Virginia's six consecutive wins is the sixth-longest winning streak in the country. It has been an ugly run but wins are wins. The Cavaliers are now in position to win their most games in the seven years Groh has been head coach.

The Cavaliers will have to play better to get to where they want to be, however. They are a solid 32nd in total defense and 22nd in scoring defense, but the offense doesn't come close, ranking 108th overall and 83rd in scoring.

They certainly are not dominating the competition. The Cavaliers are the only team in the country with four wins by five points or fewer. Of the 14 teams in the country with six wins, Virginia is one of only two squads outgained in yardage on the year.

That doesn’t promote much confidence in the second half. The good news is that the other team happens to be the team they are tied with in their division: Virginia Tech.

Of those 14 teams with at least six wins, only Boston College, Hawaii, Texas Tech and Virginia haven't played a team with a power ranking of 30th or higher. Of Virginia’s remaining five games, the only team now ranked within that top 30 is Virginia Tech. So it is quite possible that the Cavaliers will run the table until the season finale against the Hokies.

Three of Virginia’s last five games are on the road and, based on Virginia’s history with Groh, that doesn't bode well. The Cavaliers are 33-9 in 42 home games but just 12-24 on the road. Both road victories this season have been by only two points each and those came against North Carolina and Middle Tennessee, who are a combined 4-10.

The two remaining home games are not easy contests: one is against the Hokies, the other versus defending ACC champion Wake Forest.

For a team that is one of the hottest in the nation, it is almost unfathomable that there is a quarterback controversy at Virginia. But that has been the case this week. Current signal caller Jameel Sewell has led the Cavaliers to six straight wins but he is only 94th in the country in total offense.

True freshman Peter Lalich came in against Duke and was excellent. He led a 15-play touchdown drive that allowed the Cavaliers to put the game away in the fourth quarter. Now the fans want to know why he has played only once since then.

Virginia controls its own destiny but can it really run the table? Even though the remaining schedule is not demanding, the team needs more consistent play out of the offense, especially the running game. Leading rusher Cedric Peerman will miss his second-straight game this weekend at Maryland so the pressure is mounting on Sewell.
