College football season only has a few weeks left to play, but there are still a bunch of lessons that we've learned from the week that was on the CFB gridiron. Here's what caught my eye...
Lesson 1: The ACC is the most bi-polar conference in America... About the only thing that you can count on in the ACC is that you can expect the unexpected. Just a few weeks ago, everyone was talking about Miami, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech factoring into the National Championship picture. Two weeks ago, the Canes fell from the ranks of the contenders, and this week it was Virginia Tech. Yes, it's a great thing for the ACC to say that there are going to be a ton of bowl eligible squads once again in conference, but truth be told, that's just a sign of mediocrity. There's a reason that at least 11 of the 12 teams will have two losses in conference by the time this season is said and done.
Lesson 2: TCU and Boise State aren't going anywhere... Truth be told, neither the Horned Frogs nor the Broncos are going to be in the National Championship game, but both are going to keep putting the pressure on the big guns from the big conferences. Boise threw the smack down on San Jose State 45-7 on the Smurf Turf on Saturday, while TCU easily shut out UNLV. Both of these teams deserve to play in BCS games one way or the other if they run the table.
Lesson 3: Sun Belt football is starting to get a wee ridiculous... Between Western Kentucky, Troy, and North Texas, we've seen 15 straight 'over' contests and an average of 74.3 points per game between them. The Trojans dropped 30+ points for the fifth straight week on Saturday in their 42-21 victory over Louisiana-Monroe, and now they get to face the Hilltoppers, who just played in a 68-49 shootout against the Mean Green. Who knows how many points will be thrown on the board in that one?
Lesson 4: Texas Tech HC Mike Leach is an offensive genius... When Leach had QB Graham Harrell and WR Michael Crabtree, it was easy to come up with an offensive game plan that should work a good percentage of the time. However, now that both guys are gone, the Air Raid is still humming, even though it is on its third quarterback of the season. With starting QB Taylor Potts proving to be ineffective and backup QB Steven Sheffield nursing an injury, third stringer Seth Doege went 14/28 for 159 yards with a TD against Kansas on Saturday afternoon. The Red Raiders' 42-21 victory proved to be a great rebound from an awful loss against Texas A&M two weeks ago, and will assure that they're going bowling in a year which many pundits thought that they would be down.
Lesson 5: The USC defense isn't nearly as high and mighty as we thought... USC was supposed to be a National Championship contender, but after losing to Washington and Oregon, those dreams are dashed. The Men of Troy gave up a whopping 611 yards of offense, the majority of which came from RB LaMichael James (192 total yards of offense) and QB Jeremiah Masoli (385 total yards of offense). Let's go back to Boise State for a second. Remember when the Broncos held this team to 152 yards of offense way back in the first weekend of the season? I'm not sayin'... I'm just sayin'...
Lesson 6: There are going to be a lot of unhappy six-win teams that don't go bowling this year... There are only 68 slots for bowl teams in the country. There are already 60 teams with at least five wins this year. There are another 20 with four wins. That doesn't even consider the fact that there are at least a couple teams that have three wins right now that will probably claw their way to six. Sure, there are a few Sun Belt teams out there that are going to reach the magical six-win barrier that don't get bowl invites, but there are going to be a lot of big boys that are very unhappy. We already talked about the bi-polar ACC that could still reasonably have nine bowl eligible teams, but take a look at the Big XII, which has ten teams with at least five wins already. They're all probably not going to be playing into December though, which is going to make for some great football down the stretch.
