Expert Biography
Name: Ted Sevransky
Age: 41
Years in handicapping: I moved to Las Vegas to bet on sports as a full time professional in 1998, and have been out here ever since.
Achievements in Handicapping: I’ve been featured in articles in Playboy Magazine (College Hoops), the New York Times (Faces of Vegas), ESPN.com (Baseball Betting), the Washington Post (College Football), the Wall Street Journal (NFL), Trader Monthly (Football as a marketplace), the Boston Globe, the Las Vegas Review Journal and Las Vegas Sun, and many other local and national publications.
I finished 2008 as the #1 NFL handicapper as documented by the Sports Monitor, after closing out the season on a ridiculous 39-13 long term run. I’ve got a Top 10 in the famed Hilton NFL Super Contest. I’ve won the Vegas Sportswire Invitational Football Contest, the Alatex Football contest and the Ultimate Handicapping Challenge NBA Contest. I reached the Final Four in the Stardust Invitational Handicapping Contest and finished #2 in the World Series of Handicapping Contest. This is just the tip of the iceberg – my success betting football, basketball and baseball over the last decade plus is well documented.
Biggest Win: Frankly, it’s hard to list just one. My NFL Playoff Game of the Year on Arizona as an underdog over Philadelphia in the NFC Championship Game last January comes to mind, part of a 15-2-1 run with my ‘Big Ticket’ best bets in the NFL last year, including 14 straight winning Sunday’s to close out the season. My College Football Bowl Game of the Year on Tulsa over Ball State, a 45-13 annihilation as two point favorites, also stands out. Michigan State’s outright upset win over Louisville to get to the Final Four served as my NCAA Tournament Game of the Year. And I correctly nailed my Big Ticket on the Celtics to upset the Magic in Game 4 of the playoffs at Orlando as part of my ridiculous 39-17 (70%) NBA hot streak to close out the season.
Biggest Loss: I rode the Denver Nuggets repeatedly during their impressive playoff run last spring, cashing ten consecutive times with them at one point. But I loaded up on the Nuggets and encouraged my clients to do the same in Game 6 at home against the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. Needless to say, this was one Big Ticket report that didn’t deserve it’s moniker, as the Nuggets got blown out in an ugly 20 point loss to end their season.
Why I like Covers Experts: It’s very simple – if I don’t win for you, I don’t get paid. Pay after you win (guaranteed picks) makes me feel very comfortable about providing information and write-ups about my own personal wagers for my clients.
Systems used for handicapping a game: I use a combination of fundamental (breaking down the matchups on the field/court), situational (finding great 'spots' for blowouts and/or upsets and technical (angles and trends that exist for a reason) handicapping. I’m also a firm believer in ‘riding’ hot teams and ‘fading’ cold ones. You can win over and over again when betting on or against streaking teams.
I rate my plays as follows:
* Action bets: 3* or 4*, the vast majority of my wagers
* ‘Big Ticket’ plays: 5* Game of the Week, 6* Game of the Month, 7* Game of the Year. Only about one play in 20 receives a ‘Big Ticket’ designation.
Favorite stats/pages on Covers.com: I use the matchup pages every single day for college basketball and major league baseball. There is no other website like it, with all the pertinent information on a single page. The series history between the two teams; their season long statistics and their recent five game trends; great stuff like rebounding margin, assist to turnover ratio, and free throw shooting percentage are all broken down in an easy to use format. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the umpire data for baseball, a crucial factor in my success betting baseball totals.
Favorite team to wager on or against: I like to ride teams that are hot, and fade teams that are not. For example, my clients and I enjoyed great success betting on Missouri State from the Missouri Valley Conference – they covered ten times in a row for me a few years ago. I have had great success going against Iowa – the Hawkeyes failed to cover 14 straight games in Big 10 play in one recent campaign.
Team you avoid when wagering: As a graduate of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, I used to have a great read on the Wolverines football and basketball teams. Last year, I did not have anything resembling a great read on either team, and may avoid Michigan like the plague this upcoming season.
Sports and conferences Teddy excels at handicapping: NFL, NBA, MLB, college football and college hoops – pretty mainstream now that we don’t have the Arena Football League to cash in with anymore.
Quote: “I'm not married, I don't have kids, I don't drink, I handicap sports," Sevransky says. "I’ve been able to survive and thrive here in Las Vegas as a professional bettor for more than a decade. I take pride in helping my clients become successful sports bettors, earning a long term profit with their own sports investing.”
